Enter the world of dreams and phantoms that come to life through the sound of the shakuhachi, a traditional Japanese bamboo flute. The sound reflects centuries of cultural heritage and tells stories of quiet and profound meditations.
The main performer Marek Kimei Matvija, a master of the Kifū-kai school of shakuhachi, who will lead us into the quiet depths of traditional and contemporary music for this unique flute. He will be joined by Akiharu Kitagawa, an outstanding koto player of the Sawai School, and Gunnar Jinmei Linder, master of the Chikumeisha School of shakuhachi and professor at Stockholm University. This evening of music will connect the past with the present, the Orient with the West, and offer an experience that will remain in the hearts of listeners.
Japanese music like delicate brushstrokes, modest in gesture but profound in expression. In Shika no Tōne (Call of the Sika Deer), the sounds of nature – the voices of animals and the rustle of the forest – blend into a mystical, meditative dive into the world around us. This view of the soundscape continues in the compositions of Elizabeth Brown, who in Solos from Isle Royale brings to life the songs of birds whose voices become part of the musical narrative. These sounds are joined by the energetic meditations of E MU Hideaki Kurabayashi, who combines Japanese musical tradition with influences from jazz and contemporary music.
